Would You Take Home Security Advice From Ex-Burglars?

December 9th, 2015  |  News

Arlo, a U.S. home security company, is banking on a yes: you will listen to advice from former criminals. Or you’ll at least enjoy the novelty of the idea. Arlo has recruited a team of anonymous “ex-burglars” to be the voices behind @BurglarOnDemand, the Tweeps sending consumers pointers for keeping their house off a burglar’s hit list.

According to Adweek, Netgear, Arlo’s parent brand, and Heat, an ad agency, have re-imagined the topic of home security. With cheeky Tweets and SoundCloud clips featuring the distorted voices of reformed criminals, Arlo presents Burglar on Demand, the two-week campaign that makes home security entertaining.

The end goal is to make homeowners and tenants more aware of what burglars are looking at when they scope the neighbourhood for a promising target. As @BurglarOnDemand has Tweeted, clues like undisturbed snow, a full mailbox, or stagnant door flyers, tell attentive onlookers that your house is probably empty. The unconventional campaign promotes vigilant home security habits, all in the name of protecting your home and your family.

Netgear’s VP of corporate marketing says the Twitter campaign has already pulled almost 100,000 impressions after one week. After all, while consumers may not trust the personalities behind the Twitter handle, some of their advice, like keeping your vacation updates off social media, are hard to dispute.
