VW U.S. announces plan to compensate dieselgate owners

April 24th, 2016  |  Canadian Business

Seven months after the news came to light that approximately 11 million Volkswagen diesel engine vehicles were equipped with emissions test cheat modes, Canadian owners are one step closer to getting some answers on when and how their cars will be fixed.

The U.S. branch of the multinational automaker announced last week that it has reached a deal with the U.S. government regarding the resolution of the diesel emissions scandal. The resolution will involve a buyback offer to consumers who own any of the 492,000 vehicles that have 2.0 litre diesel engines. For the rest, which are equipped with 3.0L models, the buyback is not an option. However all vehicles will be offered a free fix that will keep their emissions within regulations. Those who choose the fix will also receive a small compensation fee.

It’s not clear how much owners can be expected to receive should they choose either option.

While this solution only applies to the United States, the resolution is important for Canada as vehicles sold here are also certified by the EPA. So that means the resolution in the States is likely to be adopted here or will at least be similar.

According to CBC, Canadians will learn more about the VW’s diesel solution in June.
