Uber Wants Toronto to Adopt Edmonton’s Ride-share Bylaw

March 30th, 2016  |  Auto

When the city of Edmonton voted to pass a bylaw for ride-share drivers, Uber, the most active ride-share company in the country, praised and accepted the regulations as fair and committed to following them when they went into effect.

Now it appears that Uber won’t settle for any other bylaw solution put forth other than the one put forth by Edmonton. The company demonstrated this earlier this month when Calgary announced its ride-sharing bylaw. Uber turned its back on Calgary over its bylaw. The city refused to adopt a similar structure to Edmonton because doing so would have basically meant subsidizing the company. Even in Edmonton, lack of approved insurance has kept the growing tech company from operating in the city. Now everyone’s eyes are on Toronto.

According to the Financial Post, Uber’s general manager would like Toronto to follow the Edmonton model. “The Edmonton model … has shown that there’s a way to protect consumer interests, protect public safety, but also allow for innovation.”

Uber launched a campaign this week to get Torontonians to show support for the service by signing a petition and speaking to their city councillors.
