Tropical Storm Erika Reminds Travellers to Review Insurance

August 26th, 2015  |  Travel

As Tropical Storm Erika threatens the East coast, AAA Travel Insurance reminds travellers to ‘know before they go’ – review their travel insurance policy before taking the trip. As the hurricane approaches its peak intensity, it’s important for people to protect themselves against the unpredictability that can happen while travelling.

"Basically, insurance is for medical reasons, for illness or death to yourself or any immediate family member," said Sandra Horton, AAA Travel and Insurance General Manager.

People can buy travel insurance for protection against more than health costs; trip interruption and/or cancellation can be bought as well. The right coverage will protect against weather events, flight delays, and even beyond.

People can purchase a policy that covers medical expenses for as low as $25, but it can go as high as a thousand dollars, depending on trip length and age of applicant.

Horton advises people to talk about their coverage needs with their travel agent, as they may be knowledgeable about the kind of coverage that will be helpful for the region you are travelling to.

She reminds people that buying trip cancellation insurance will not guarantee coverage in every situation, unless you purchase that kind of coverage. "If you do not want to go because you're fearful of the hurricane, then that is not covered unless you purchase a ‘cancel for any reason plan’," said Horton.
