Toyota and Uber to form partnership

May 24th, 2016  |  Canadian Business

Late yesterday afternoon, the press was alerted to a shiny new deal between the largest automotive manufacturer in the world and the most valuable startup in the world.

Toyota Motor Corp and Uber Technologies are now officially partners, working together to “explore ride-sharing”. According to the Verge, the partnership will include a new leasing option for Uber drivers to lease vehicles from Toyota financed directly out of their ride fares. The leasing periods will be flexible and tailored to the needs of Uber drivers. The two companies dalso want to bring ride-sharing to countries that don’t have it yet.

While they have not disclosed the amount of the investment, one can be sure that it’ll probably be a hefty chunk of change considering other high profile partnerships between the auto and technology industries. Besides Toyota and Uber there have been announcements of collaboration between General Motors and Lyft, Apple and Didi Chuxing (a Chinese ride-sharing company), and Volkswagen and smaller ride-sharing company, Gett. Those partnerships came with investments of $500 million, $1 billion, and $300 million respectively.
