Toronto’s First Winter Storm Triggers Collisions, Outages, and Flight Cancellations

December 28th, 2015  |  Canadian Business

For many winter-loving Canadians, Toronto’s first snowfall was a highly-anticipated event. But for the city’s travellers and many of its residents, Monday’s snowstorm was nothing short of dangerous and inconvenient.

The evening of December 28 blasted Toronto with snow, freezing rain, and high winds. Needless to say, the city’s first taste of winter weather made for very messy road conditions. According to the Toronto Star’s latest report, about 330 car collisions occurred in the GTA between Monday night and Tuesday morning. An Ontario Provincial Police sergeant adds, however, that most of these accidents involved only one car.

But drivers weren’t the only ones affected by the storm. The Toronto Pearson Airport already cancelled flights and expects more delays. Torontonians who sought refuge indoors didn’t get much relief either. The storm knocked out hydro wires and caused power outages that left thousands of residents without heat.

Some major roads are still blocked following collisions and others are moving slowly as cleanup crews work through the area. Plan for a longer commute before you get behind the wheel. Above all else, drive carefully and watch out for the pedestrians busily navigating puddles instead of checking their surroundings.
