Toronto Transit Cops Cleared After Alleged Assault

August 17th, 2015  |  News

After attending a Maple Leaf’s hockey game in January, a father and son became involved in an altercation that quickly turned into an all-out fight with two transit officers at Toronto’s Union Station. Russell and his son Jamie Gillman were subdued by TTC Officers after a physical exchange but it didn’t end there. And it was all caught on video.

Jamie Gillman stated that one officer held him down while the other one punched him repeatedly, over and over again. After the incident, both Russell and Jamie were charged with assaulting law enforcement officers and are awaiting their appearance in court.

An independent investigation was launched by the Toronto Police Service into the use of force shown in the phone video, by request of the TTC. The Gilman’s recently received a statement that the police had looked into the issue and found that the two transit officers had “applied use of force lawfully and justifiably.”

The Gilmans were shocked.

“I don’t understand how they can say it’s justified the way they acted when one guy is pinning me and other guy is punching me as hard as he could with so many overhand rights,” Jamie Gillman said.

Little is known about how the Toronto Police Service arrived at their decision. It isn’t clear if the TTC officers had cooperated with the investigation or what the panel’s final report said. All requests to release the report have been denied.

The quest for the truth is not over, however. The Gilman’s lawyer plans to call the officers to the stand to answer questions about Jamie Gilman's assault at their trial.
