Toronto Property Tax Will Increase this Year

February 24th, 2016  |  Home

The proposed budget featuring a 1.3 per cent increase in property taxes was passed last week in Toronto.

With a fairly overwhelming vote of 33 - 9 the council approved the budget with only a few amendments according to CBC. The increase, which will amount to 1.3 per cent plus an additional 0.6 per cent for a Scarborough subway line will amount to just a $72.26 per year increase for homeowners, but generate millions of dollars to go towards maintaining and expanding infrastructure as well as funding social services and initiatives.

The majority of the $10.1 billion will go to the city’s most essential services such as transit and policing.

Criticism of the budget has focused on the lack of foresight for Toronto’s financial future. The budget relies heavily on drawing funds from reserves as opposed to generating enough revenue to cover its costs. Because of this it is generally agreed upon that the city will need to find ways to increase revenue for 2017’s budget. One of the ways the council might decide to do this is by raising property taxes even higher.

Considering the strength of Toronto’s housing market, it could be the best available source of income for truly making the city one of the world’s best places to live.
