Share Your Ride With a Stranger: uberPOOL Launches in Toronto

January 13th, 2016  |  Canadian Business

Your Uber ride just got cheaper. And maybe a little more interesting too. As of 2 p.m. EST today, uberPOOL is available in the streets of Toronto. So if you want to save a couple extra bucks, you can share your Uber with a stranger.

Basically, uberPOOL is Uber’s modern spin on the traditional carpool. Here’s how it works.

Simply request an Uber as usual: select uberX, enter your pickup location and your destination, etc. Then you’ll find an option to request uberPOOL. If you opt in for this service, you’ll be matched with another traveller headed in the same direction. You’ll all take one Uber and split the fare.

But why request an uberPOOL? Like with any carpool, it saves you money. According to a statement by Uber, uberPOOL rides are actually 30% cheaper than uberX rides. Uber also believes that this service will contribute to a traffic relief solution and that it will further empower commuters.

So while uberPOOL may force you to sit through an awkward silence, at least your bank account will be happy.

All in all, it looks like Uber is making itself at home in Ontario. This uberPOOL news comes just a week after the announcement that Aviva will be offering ride-share coverage in February.
