Selfies Claim More Lives than Shark Attacks

September 24th, 2015  |  Canadian Business

Selfies have come out on top against shark attacks for claiming lives this year, according to Mashable, and there’s no hint that it will be changing anytime soon.

These findings come on the heels of a tragic death of a 66 year old man who fell down the Taj Mahal stairs, India, while attempting to take a selfie.

While the numbers aren’t large, with selfie-related accidents claiming 12 lives this year and shark attacks 8, it’s more than it should be. Focusing on that little phone screen has caused falls, car accidents, animal attacks, accidental weapon discharge, and electrocutions.

One man was gored to death after attempting a selfie at Pamplona’s Running with the Bulls while another tried to feed bears at a Colorado park and was attacked.

In addition to the loss of life, even minor selfie-related accidents like those pictures taken while driving can lead to soaring insurance premiums, criminal charges and damage to property.

Safety campaigns have been launched around the world against distracted driving, distracted walking and even distracted selfie-taking and governments hope that an increased awareness will help people remember to be careful.
