Sears Canada liquidation begins Oct 19th, and will not be honoring warranties after Oct 18th

October 16th, 2017  |  Canadian Business

After announcing it’s closure on October 10th, days later the courts approved the complete liquidation of Sears Canada. The liquidation of the remaining 131 stores is set to begin October 19th, and should last about 10 to 14 weeks.

The day before the liquidation begins, marks the day that Sears Canada will no longer be honoring their “Sears Protection Agreements” (SPAs). Any Sears customers who purchased SPAs within the last 30 days are eligible for a refund.

"After October 18, Sears will no longer be in a position to honor Sears Protection Agreements to customers," the chain said in a release.

Sears Canada went on to say that many of their products come with a 1-year manufacturers warranty. Unfortunately however, many customers have paid extra over the years for added protection and repair services, which will now be null and void as of Wednesday.

Sears now faces the task of finding a way to save the Sears Canada Product Repair Services business.

"Sears continues to seek a purchaser for the Sears Canada Product Repair Services (PRS) business, but the terms upon which an acquirer of that business would provide services to Sears customers are not known at this time," Sears said.

When officially announcing the liquidation date, Sears Canada also put forth a statement regarding the fate of chairman, Brandon Stranzl.

"In light of the liquidation, his services are no longer required," the company said. "The company thanks Brandon for his service to Sears Canada and wishes him well in the future."

Stranzl was unsuccessful in his attempt to bid for company, failing to save the last of the 131 Sears Canada stores, and roughly 12,000 Canadian jobs.
