School Zone Speed Limits Return to Saskatoon

August 31st, 2015  |  Auto

The dog days of summer have officially drawn to a close with all school zone speed limits coming back this Tuesday, September 1, the first day of school for most students.

The city of Saskatoon is asking residents to slow down, reminding them that school zone hours are from 8am to 5pm from Monday to Friday. The 30 km speed limit will be in effect until June 30 and includes all statutory holidays and school breaks.

"It only takes on average 12 seconds or so of additional time for a driver to drive through your typical school zone in Saskatoon, driving at 30 km/h compared to driving 50 km/h," said Jay Magus, Engineering Manager in the city's Transportation Branch.

Magus stated the extra time was important for helping all pedestrians be safe in school zones, especially younger children.

School zone speeding fines start at a hefty $192 but the real cost will come when that traffic ticket starts affecting car insurance rates. More than 3,000 tickets were given out last year in school zones and SGI promises to continue monitoring with their automated speed enforcement pilot project. One camera will rotate through five school zones in Saskatoon.
