Samsung’s Innovative Safety Solution For Drivers Stuck Behind Trucks

February 6th, 2016  |  Auto

Driving behind a truck isn’t just annoying; it’s also dangerous. But trying to pass trucks on a single-lane road is a risky move that most drivers aren’t comfortable making. Enter Samsung’s “Safety Truck”.

With cameras attached to the front of the truck and a large screen secured to the back, the Safety Truck makes use of regular Samsung technology to give drivers a clear picture of the road ahead. Fortune Magazine reports that the rear-end screen broadcasts everything the front cameras record -- live and in real-time.

The result? Drivers stuck behind the truck can see what the road in front of the truck looks like. The simple, but innovative, solution helps them safely pass semis.

The idea behind the Safety Truck seems to be the first of its kind. It’s being tested in Argentina, a country frequently plagued by high volumes of deadly road collisions. If the Argentina Safety Truck is deemed a successful road safety solution, the concept may spread to Canada.

Our roads may not be considered as deadly as Argentina's, but they certainly need to be safer. Cities like Toronto continue to advocate for better, more comprehensive road safety plans as pedestrian deaths mount to unacceptable numbers.

Time magazine has already declared the Safety Truck to be one of the best inventions of 2015, so signs are good. Front cameras and rear-end screens may become a regular feature on trucks and busses.
