'Safe texting zones' could come to Ontario highways

Would knowing that there are about 185 existing areas near provincial highways where you can safely stop and use your phone keep you from using it on the road? A lot of people in the Ontario government seem to think so.

The province of Ontario is currently considering a “Safe Texting Zones” bill that would focus on informing drivers of upcoming areas that they can safely stop and text in much the same way there is signage to let drivers know there are upcoming gas stations or rest stops.

According to the Toronto Star, Conservative member Vic Fideli, who put forth the bill got the idea from the United States where he noticed signs along highways in Pennsylvania and New York promoting safe texting zones.

The zones will basically work by adding signage to inform drivers of upcoming safe areas to stop and use electronic devices. The logic is that if people are reminded more often that they can wait to use their device, then more people will stay off of them while driving.

The idea is popular with MPPs from all three parties as well as law enforcement given its low cost of implementation and simplicity. While it seems likely the bill will pass, it will be interesting to see if drivers actually take heed of the zones or if the hassle of having to stop and resume one’s trip will keep them taking risks on the road.
