Ram recalls more of their trucks due to gear shifter problems

February 16th, 2018  |  Auto

Back in December Ram recalled 1.8 million trucks because they could be shifted out of park without the driver's foot on the brake or possibly without the key in the ignition. Now, Ram has recalled an additional 229,000 trucks for the same issue. Fiat Chrysler said it discovered that more trucks than anticipated could be affected by the problem.

According to U.S. government documents, if the brake pedal on an affected model is pushed for a long time when the truck is running and in park, the brake-shift interlock pin can become lodged in an open position. The result is an increased risk of unintended rollaway. As a precaution, Fiat Chrysler is urging drivers to utilize their parking breaks.

The new recall covers certain 1500, 2500 and 3500 pickups. Also included are 3500, 4500 and 5500 Chassis Cab trucks. All of the trucks affected are from 2017 and 2018 and have steering column shifters.

The last recall included a number of 2010 through 2017 Ram 2500 and 3500 pickups, 2011 through 2017 Ram 3500, 4500 and 5500 chassis cabs, and 2016 and 2017 Ram 3500 chassis cabs that weigh less than 10,000 pounds. Also included were some 2009 through 2017 Ram 1500 pickups.

Dealers are expected to update software and replace a switch if needed. The recall is set to begin on March 30th.
