Quebec approves Aviva’s ride-sharing insurance coverage

May 19th, 2016  |  Auto

The adoption has been slow but steady for ride-sharing in Canada as most cities have failed to change bylaws to adapt to the emerging sector. Similarly, it’s taken a long time for provinces to approve insurance coverage for the thousands of working drivers that are now working in the ride-sharing space. Now after getting coverage in Ontario, Aviva has also gotten approval for its ride-sharing coverage in Quebec.

Quebec has yet to regulate ride-sharing, but according to the company’s press release Quebec drivers “can count on coverage from Aviva” in the event the government does. The coverage option appears identical to that offered in Ontario, with drivers having to meet certain requirements to be eligible for the coverage.

In recent months, ride-sharing has been legalized in Toronto, Calgary, and Edmonton although each jurisdiction has approved different regulations which can affect which ride-sharing companies choose to operate there. While Uber has been the main service in Canada so far, it’s only a matter of time before more competition enters the space. Aviva’s coverage applies independent of any particular company, so drivers who work with different companies will not need to worry about whether they’re covered or not while they’re working.
