Proposed regulation will legalize Uber in Toronto

April 7th, 2016  |  Canadian Business

Changes are likely coming to the Toronto taxi laws that will not only allow for ride-sharing companies to operate legally, but will also loosen taxi regulations to make it easier for them to compete with their app-based peers.

The proposed regulations will distinguish ride-sharing companies as different than taxi companies and will be subject to different regulations. Many taxi associations called for Uber to be held to the same standards as them, but clearly this is not what most cities intend as both Edmonton and Calgary implemented ride-sharing bylaws that are significantly less rigid than those put in place for taxis.

Uber has stated its praise of the Edmonton regulation approach, but has yet to comment on the proposed Toronto plan. The Toronto Star reports that under the new laws Toronto ride-sharing drivers will be required to pass a screening process; they’ll have to provide proof of insurance coverage for $2 million collision and $5 million dollar commercial general liability.
