Owner Left on Hook after Designated Driver Service Totals His Car

March 4th, 2016  |  Auto

In January, Dylan Milosh took his girlfriend out for drinks. Being the responsible man he is, he decided to hire a designated driver instead of grabbing a taxi or Uber.

Unfortunately the entirely sober driver ended up getting into an accident anyway when he rear ended a parked RV.

As Milosh told CTV News, “Long story short, about a kilometre after departing where we were going from, my car was written off.”

After the crash, his insurance went up and the accident went on his driving record. The company and the person that was actually driving? Nothing. They washed their hands of the whole thing.

People’s Choice Designated Drivers acknowledged that their driver made a mistake and were willing to pay Milosh’s damages as well as his deductible of $500. However, the damage was too extensive and he ended up replacing the car (on his own dime). There doesn’t seem to be anything Milosh can do about his record being tarnished or premiums going up.

The Insurance Bureau of Canada’s Pete Karageorgos confirmed that those are the breaks. “If there’s a crash that the vehicle’s involved in while that person’s driving, it’s going on your record.”

While a designated driver service is a great idea in theory it’s important to be mindful of exactly how you are covered in any situation where you are giving control of your vehicle or your safety to someone else.
