Over 1 million GM trucks recalled over seat belt

April 17th, 2016  |  Canadian Business

Listen up if you drive a 2014 or 2015 GMC Sierra or Chevy Silverado.

General Motors will be recalling more than a million of its pickup trucks in order to repair flawed seat belt designs that may result in belts not holding the driver in a crash. According to CTV News, the problem is due to a steel cable connecting the belts to the trucks. The cable bends when the driver sits on the seat, causing it to wear down over time and eventually separate completely. Once that happens, your seat belt could become loose.

Despite the seriousness of the problem it hasn’t yet caused any casualties. The problem was instead noticed by analyzing warranty data. The fix is fairly simple involving the installation of a bracket on the cable tensioner or a replacement if necessary.

The company has stated that owners will soon be notified of when the recall will start, but for now it seems that they aren’t telling people to stay off the road if they drive one of the affected vehicles. This is probably due to the rare nature of the problem, which would mostly affect trucks with drivers who enter and exit a lot, such as business owners.
