The OPP Launches Distracted Driver Awareness Week

March 14th, 2016  |  Auto

When you’re behind the wheel, both your hands should be on it and both your eyes should be on the road. With cell phones and internet connectivity becoming a daily constant in our lives, it has become harder to keep our eyes off the screen when we drive. Hence the Ontario Provincial Police is making distracted driving a priority this week as it launches its annual Distracted Driving Awareness campaign.

According to CP24, distracted driving led the causes of deadly road crashes last year with 69 deaths. Speed, seat belts, and alcohol/drugs made up the other major causes with 61, 51, and 45 deaths respectively.

With 20,000 distracted driving charges laid in Ontario since 2013, it also more than doubles the amount of impaired driving charges.

Ontario has sought to curb the bad habits by increasing fines and demerits for all forms of distracted driving which includes much more than just using your phone.

These numbers underscore the importance of OPP’s campaign which encourages regular citizens to help crack down on distracted driving in their own lives.
