Ontario home inspectors to be regulated by province soon

August 23rd, 2016  |  Home

Home inspection is an essential aspect of owning a home. Before you buy it, you’ll need one, and even once you’ve been living in it for a while, you’ll need to inspect it every so often to make sure nothing’s wrong.

A bad home inspection can lead to all sorts of terrible things like unchecked mould damage or a structurally unsafe remodel. Not only can it ruin your finances, but it can put you and your family’s lives in danger. Just refer to the case of Sydney Walters. While such an extreme case is thankfully rare, having home inspectors licensed and vetted by the government is sure to give homeowners and home buyers peace of mind and protection when getting their property inspected.

According to CBC, the legislation in question will be up for a vote this fall. This isn’t the first time someone tried to regulate home inspectors, as Liberal MPP Han Dong introduced a private bill to license home inspection in April this year. It was shot down before but this time with the minister backing, the bill has a much higher chance of passing.

The regulation will focus on making sure licensed home inspectors are properly educated and that they operate with an appropriate amount of insurance to cover both the inspector and the consumer they miss something in their inspection.
