Oil Slump Forces WestJet to Scale Back Calgary and Edmonton Flights

January 25th, 2016  |  Canadian Business

Everyone has been keeping an eye on Alberta’s slipping oil prices, and WestJet’s no exception. After contending with empty flights and declining demand, WestJet Encore has decided to reduce Edmonton and Calgary flights altogether.

Beginning on March 5, WestJet is trimming back its service to and from Alberta’s two big cities. The Calgary-based airline is relocating its resources to other Canadian destinations with higher demand: Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Halifax, and Fredericton.

As the oil sector has struggled, business travel to and from Calgary and Edmonton has dwindled dramatically. WestJet’s executive vice president, Bob Cummings, reports that the airline has already used discount prices to try to fill its planes. Now bigger measures need to be taken.

According to CBC News, WestJet will stop flying to Terrace and Prince George from Calgary. WestJet is also cancelling daily flights between Edmonton and two British Columbia cities, Nanaimo and Kamloops.
