New Driving Laws and Policies Take Effect in 2016

December 30th, 2015  |  Canadian Business

It’s time to say goodbye to 2015 and hello to 2016. Just remember: the new year is bringing changes that will impact Ontario and Alberta drivers. Here’s a quick look at the laws and policies that come into effect on January 1.

The Ontario winter tire discount becomes mandatory in 2016. As many winter-tire aficionados already know, the discount isn’t new to Ontario. However, as of January 1, all insurers are required to offer insurance discounts to drivers who buy and install four winter tires. Discounts will vary across providers, so don’t forget to shop around for car insurance to find the most affordable policy.

According to CTV News, a new driving law launches in Ontario: as of January 1, drivers cannot travel through a school crossing or pedestrian crossover until all pedestrians have completely cleared the road. Drivers who fail to obey this law will be hit with a fine ranging between $150 and $500. Currently, drivers only have to yield half the road to pedestrians.

Meanwhile, across Canada, Alberta’s rolling out increased penalties for distracted driving. In the new year, distracted drivers will not only face a $287 fine, they’ll also face demerit points. The province is hopeful that stiffer penalties will protect both drivers and pedestrians.

Stay safe, alert, and informed, drivers! See you in 2016!
