Mechanics Now Make House Calls, Instamek

August 18th, 2015  |  News

Brick and mortar mechanic shops better beware because Instamek is bringing mechanics to their customers’ doors. Instamek is an on-demand service that matches customers with car troubles to mechanics willing and able to come to the consumer’s home.

It all began with two Chemical Engineer friends, Uzair Ahmed and Asem Alsaadi, who thought outside the box and built a website that paired customers with mechanics who make house calls.

The company claims that in addition to being more convenient, they are more cost-effective. They state that services cost 30 percent less on average compared to in-shop repairs - cheaper business costs for mechanics means cheaper repair prices for customers.

"[Instamek] gives the consumers a lower price because there's no overhead of a shop," Ahmed said. "It gives freedom to the mechanics to pick whatever job they want, when they want, how they want to work it."

At this point, Instamek mechanics can only do simpler services like brakes, alternators, and suspensions. More complex work like transmissions will still have to be done at a regular mechanic shop.

The business has quickly spread from Edmonton to other cities in Alberta: Calgary, Lethbridge and Fort McMurray. Ahmed and Alsaadi have plans to expand into Saskatchewan with a launch prepped for Saskatoon this fall.
