Many Fort McMurray residents still can’t go home

August 6th, 2016  |  News

Over a month since the catastrophic Fort McMurray wildfires, one would hope the situation in the area is that of a bustling rebuilding effort. Reports from residents paint a very different picture.

“People throughout Canada think Fort McMurray is back to normal. We are so far from normal.” said resident Sandra Legacy according to InsuranceBusiness.ca.

For many residents in the area, health and safety restrictions are keeping them from being able to permanently move back into their homes. Those who lost their homes are unable to begin rebuilding. And because some home insurance policies will only cover the cost of rebuilding a home if it’s done within a year, the delay is making some residents anxious.

The city hasn’t done much to shed light on the matter, which is the main point of contention for many residents, who understand the necessity for safety and caution, but don’t appreciate being left in the dark.

As what often seems to be the case after big disasters, it takes quite a while for life to return to normal after a major disaster. Victims will end up jumping through hoops for insurance companies on top of other emotional and financial burden.
