Intact Financial to Offer Uber Drivers Insurance Coverage

There’s relief on the horizon for Canadian Uber driver’s looking for insurance coverage. The ridesharing program recently announced their intentions to partner with insurance giant, Intact Financial, to offer specialized products for Canadian drivers.

Uber's on-demand services quickly grew into a multi-billion dollar industry in America but hit some speed bumps when they crossed over into Canada. Questions were raised after the Alberta government stated they had studied Uber's supplemental insurance coverage and found that it wasn't compliant with the province's Insurance Act.

"Drivers using Uber ride-sharing services may believe that Uber’s supplemental insurance provides the necessary coverage," the office of the Superintendent of Insurance said in a statement. "This is currently not the case in Alberta."

The Insurance Board of Canada urged Uber drivers to contact their insurance company to make certain they were protected to avoid problems on the road

Uber saw the need to address these concerns and partnered with Intact Financial to design insurance coverage specific to the needs of the ridesharing program.

Intact issued their own statement earlier this week announcing the collaboration. "[Intact Financial’s] core business is focused on consumer protection and meeting the insurance needs of Canadians,” said Louis Gagnon, President, Service & Distribution of Intact Financial Corporation.

Gagnon went on to state that with the rising popularity of “on-demand” programs like Uber, Intact Financial was working hard to find “innovative solutions to meet the changing needs of consumers”.
