IIHS crowns 2016 Ford-150 the safest full-size pickup

April 12th, 2016  |  Canadian Business

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) released its safety ratings for the industry’s latest full-size pickup trucks and while most manufacturers struggles with mediocre scores, the Ford F-150 SuperCrew and SuperCab both netted top grades in safety tests earning them the Institute’s top pick.

The Institute used a small overlap test to replicate a vehicle running off a road and into a tree or pole at 64 km/h. According to Driving.ca, the institute tests both crew and extended cabs of the same model because different body styles have been shown to perform differently in crash situations and those are the most popular two.

After the SuperCab was shown to be less safe than the SuperCrew in the previous year’s tests, Ford added structural enhancements to help absorb impact. Clearly the additions helped, making the F-150 the safest new truck in the country.

The other models results were a mixed bag, with the Dodge Ram coming out in overall last place.

While all of the trucks pass federal safety requirements, the IIHS uses a different set of tests for its ratings.

The Fords may be on top right now, but later this year two more competitors join the race: the Nissan Titan and Honda Ridgeline, which the IIHS plans to test when they officially go on sale.
