Heavy storm hits the Maritimes

October 11th, 2016  |  News

Remnants of Hurricane Matthew and another storm off the coast of the Carolinas combined to create a horrible thanksgiving for Nova Scotians and other Canadians on the east coast.

Parts of Nova Scotia saw over 200 mm of rain on Monday as heavy rain and winds battered the province. Thousands were left without power as emergency crews worked overnight to restore order. According to CBC there were about 144,000 outages in total. By Tuesday morning they’d restored power to 87,000 customers.

With just over 50,000 left powerless on Tuesday crews have been working hard to get things back to normal, but it’s slow work due to strong winds and flooded roads. They don’t expect to fully restore power to everyone until early Wednesday morning.

While there’s not much anyone can do about the weather, it’s important to remember the things you can do. Before a storm hits make sure you are prepared and make sure you have flood damage coverage if your area is flood prone.
