GM and Lyft to test driverless electric taxis

May 17th, 2016  |  Canadian Business

The three biggest buzzwords in the auto industry right now are: electric, autonomous, and ride-sharing. So it’s no surprise General Motors is doing everything they can to become a dominant force in all three.

After making headlines earlier this year for acquiring an autonomous driving developer as well as partnering up with Lyft, it seems as though the pieces have been put in place for GM to start catching up with Google and Tesla in the race for both self-driving cars and the race to corner the electric vehicle market with the Chevrolet Bolt. Lyft, in the meantime stands to steal a little bit of the ride-sharing market away from Uber if the addition of self-driving taxis translates into better customer experiences, which is exactly what they hope to achieve.

Details are scarce, but The Wall Street Journal reports that Lyft will begin testing self-driving Chevrolet Bolts within a year’s time. How many Bolts will make up their autonomous fleet and where the fleet will test has yet to be announced, but the companies have made it clear how committed they are to building customers’ trust in a fully autonomous system.
