General Motors Canada expands self-driving research team

June 11th, 2016  |  Auto

Over the weekend General Motors Canada announced a plan to hire about 700 engineers to more than triple the size of their Canadian technology development group.

The announcement was made on Friday in Oshawa, ON, which is one of the two locations the new research teams will operate out of, the other being Markham, ON. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Premier Kathleen Wynne attended the event, representing the commitment the government has previously expressed for developing Canada as a technological innovator.

According to the Financial Post, GM Canada currently has 300 engineers on its payroll working on new technology. The company’s goal is to grow that number to about 1000 over the next few years. The new hires will be put to work on advancing self-driving and connected car technology.
