Gas prices likely to spike in the wake of Hurricane Harvey

September 2nd, 2017  |  News

Gas prices in Ontario are predicted climb amid the impact made by Harvey on Houston and the U.S. oil infrastructure.

Senior petroleum analyst for GasBuddy.com, Dan McTeague, warned that areas including Toronto, London, Ottawa, and Hamilton could see a hike in gas prices of nine to 10 cents per litre on Saturday, on top of a projected rise of five cents per litre on Friday.

If McTeague’s predictions are correct, prices would hit between $1.329 and $1.339 per litre on Saturday, the highest pump prices paid in the area since September 2014.

"We may see even higher prices Sunday and into next week," said in an interview with CBC News.

By Thursday, the Golden Horseshoe area had already seen increases of at least 3 cents a litre.

These predictions come as the fallout continues from the disastrous events occurring in the Houston area and the Louisiana coast. Harvey has resulted in the shutdown of approximately 25% of the refining output of the United States. US gas prices shot up on Thursday after Colonial Pipeline Company, which runs the largest US fuel transport system, announced that it will be shutting its main lines to the US northeast, citing outages at pumping points and a lack of supplies from refiners.
