The Fort McMurray wildfire is under control

July 6th, 2016  |  News

While the situation is far from over, the wildfire in Fort McMurray has now officially been classified as “under control”.

The massive fire that was first discovered two months ago on May 1 grew to almost 590,000 hectares in size and destroyed over 2000 buildings, forcing the evacuation of nearly 90,000 people. Just a few days ago the province lifted the state of emergency they declared thanks to the fire and this Tuesday morning, it appears the fire has finally been reduced to manageable levels.

The disaster is estimated to be the costliest the country has ever seen. The effect of the fire will be felt by residents and the whole country for decades to come. Now that the fire itself is no longer a major threat, the province and its people are focusing on rebuilding.
