Ford recalling 680,000 cars over seat belt issues

December 2nd, 2016  |  Auto

Once again this year, Ford has some major automobile issues on its hands. After recalling various 2011 and 2012 models in April and having some of its Fiesta and Focus cars investigated for transmission issues in October, the company has just announced another major recall that will see it bring back over 680,000 cars due to problems with seat belt functionality.

In the event of a collision, seat belt pre-tensioners deploy and begin to heat up. That heat, however, is proving to be potentially strong enough to break cables that hold the integrity of the seat belts together. Ford is already aware of two injuries that have been caused by this phenomenon.

The vehicles being recalled date back all the way to 2013. In the group are certain 2013-2015 Lincoln MKZs, 2013-2016 Ford Fusions, and 2015-2016 Ford Mondeos. It is unclear as to the full range of countries in which these cars have made their rounds to, but the vast majority of them have reportedly remained in North America.

This news unfortunately obscures a more positive Ford development. The automaker actually saw double-digit rises in Canadian sales for the month of November. For the month it sold 24,472 vehicles, which is 18% more than it did for the same month in 2015.
