Fire Destroys Winnipeg Family’s Home

December 27th, 2015  |  Canadian Business

Trudy Genaille returned from the store and found her Winnipeg home engulfed in flames. Luckily, herself and her son weren’t home when the fire started and her partner managed to escape the flames with their pets in tow. But without renter’s insurance, the losses were devastating.

CBC News reports that on Sunday December 27, around noon, a fire tore through the family’s home on Parr Street. At this time, neither Genaille’s family nor officials know what caused the fire or how much the damages will cost. Here’s what the family does know: they lost all their Christmas gifts, clothes, food, and personal belongings.

So with the new year just days away, the family of three may be starting 2016 with nothing. They did not have renter’s insurance, which means they’ll be left to cover their personal property losses on their own.

Unfortunately, their story isn't unusual -- many other Canadian families without insurance have seen their homes destroyed by fire. Some families skip coverage because they can't find an affordable home insurance policy. Other families take the risk, believing their chances of needing a policy are low.

Genaille and her family plan to set up fundraising efforts in the near future.
