Female-only taxi service promises safe rides for women in Toronto

May 30th, 2016  |  Canadian Business

A Toronto-based entrepreneur hopes to launch a ride-sharing service similar to Uber but one that will only hire and provide rides for women.

Her name is Aisha Addo, her idea is called DriveHer. It’s a simple idea, born out of Addo’s own uncomfortable experiences with taxi drivers. In a world where sexual violence towards women is an ongoing problem, a service like DriveHer could go a long way to providing a safe space for women to simply just get to where they want to be without being subjected to the potential discomfort of unwanted male attention.

The idea is very popular with other women, according to CBC, who not only see it as a safer option for getting from point A to point B, it’s a good way to get more women making money behind the wheel.

Addo hopes to get the service up and running by the end of this summer provided she can pull together the funds to pay the city’s $20,000 licensing application fee, get police checks for all her drivers and of course, make sure they all use the right auto insurance coverage.
