Fake Car Crash Gets Real Police Response

November 2nd, 2015  |  Auto

Andrew Theodore loves putting together themed Halloween displays for his front yard and this year’s was so real it drew a police response.

The Ottawa man stated that he takes every Halloween off so he can create elaborate Halloween exhibits like werewolves in a cage or a play-acted headless horseman fight but this year’s was a different story.

Theodore decided he wanted to stage a car crash in his front yard to warn young people about the dangers of texting and driving.

He had a car towed in from a junk yard and had it positioned in front of his house so it looked like it had hit a tree.

"I had the car pushed up onto my yard hitting the tree, which left about three feet, maybe three and a half feet, hanging onto the street," said Theodore on Sunday.

Somebody saw the fake car collision, grew concerned, and called the real police to respond to what they thought was an actual accident.

Police asked Theodore to move the car further into his yard so the display didn’t overhang onto public property.

Theodore said he hadn’t thought about how a fake car collision could relate to Halloween until a friend mentioned the risks of distracted driving and he was hooked.

"Texting and driving is such a big thing these days… we thought it would be a good opportunity to target the kids with that message," he said.
