Engagement Story Turns Into Search and Rescue for Lost Ring

November 4th, 2015  |  News

For Darin Reimer and Caitlin McAuley, their engagement night was a memorable evening – but not for the usual reasons.

Tofino Beach, Vancouver Island, was the place Reimer chose to ask his girlfriend the biggest question of their lives and it looked happily ever after until McAuley noticed something.

Her engagement ring had slid off her finger.

“My hand was wet from the rain and I moved and looked off and I knew it right away,” she said. “We were trying to find it in the dark and it was raining. We got some flashlights and we were back out in the morning as soon as it was daylight.”

Reimer, who is from Calgary, and McAuley, from Vernon, B.C., spent the next eighteen hours using garden tools, kitchen implements, metal detectors, and their bare hands to find the missing ring.

After a hard search, the ring turned up a few feet from where McAuley had been standing when she felt it slip off her finger.

“We were in shock. It was incredible,” Reimer said on Sunday.

The ring had been custom designed and Reimer stated he had not taken out insurance on it prior to popping the question to McAuley.

It turned out well for the newly engaged couple but it could have been a costly mistake.
