Edmonton Police End Bike Bell Bust with 18 Criminal Charges

October 16th, 2015  |  Canadian Business

When two Edmonton police stopped a cyclist to issue a bylaw ticket earlier this week, they got more than they bargained for when trying to address a pedestrian and bicycle safety issue.

The Edmonton Police Service members initially stopped a man for not having a working bell on his bike while riding on a sidewalk.

He gave them a fake name but that was just the beginning, as the officers soon discovered.

While in the process of arresting the man for obstruction, a knife fell out of the man’s pocket.

In a search of his bag, EPS members also found a sawed-off shotgun, drugs, and trafficking paraphernalia.

In a post to their Facebook page, EPS stated the incident “ended up in 18 charges of weapons, trafficking, obstruction and breaching conditions…and one ticket for riding a bicycle without a bell.”
