Domino’s Pizza to Test Driverless Delivery in New Zealand

March 20th, 2016  |  Auto

Oh what a time to be alive.

The world’s largest pizza chain has made an announcement that could put it years ahead of the competition when it comes to the business of delivering ‘za. Domino’s Pizza will test a robot delivery service in New Zealand.

The announcement came last Friday according to CTV News. The autonomous vehicle Domino has developed are purpose-built four-wheelers designed for both road and sidewalk mobility. It runs on battery power and are capable of transporting up to 10 pizzas within a 20 km radius of its Domino’s location. Customers will be given passcodes upon ordering their food and will be required to enter it into a keypad in order to retrieve their food.

The name Domino’s has given its newest recruit is DRU (Domino’s Robotic Unit). They describe “him” as “cheeky and endearing and we are confident that one day he will become an integral part of the Domino's family."

While the New Zealand government is very enthusiastic about bringing new transport technology to their country, they have yet to set a date for when DRU’s trials can begin. Personally, what I want to know is if it will be impolite to not tip a robot.
