Do You Drive for Uber?

December 26th, 2015  |  Canadian Business

That’s the question Wawanesa Insurance, a Canadian insurance company, is asking drivers when they renew their policies. And if you answer yes to being an Uber driver, Wawanesa may cancel your coverage.

According to the Toronto Star, Wawanesa is taking immediate measures against UberX claims. The insurer's actions also happen to reiterate one of the most important Uber insurance issues: a personal auto insurance policy does not cover claims that result from incidents where the car was operating as a commercial vehicle.

Yet experts speculate that, right now, most of Toronto’s UberX drivers don’t have commercial auto insurance. That’s in spite of the fact that UberX contracts reportedly urge drivers to buy the proper insurance.

Toronto Mayor John Tory vowed to roll out regulations to enforce insurance requirements equally on both taxi and Uber drivers. However, these regulations aren’t slated until the new year and Uber is still running despite requests for a service halt until these regulations have been put into motion.

So, Wawanesa isn’t waiting for the city’s intervention. On its own, Wawanesa plans to weed out the Uber drivers from the rest of their policyholders. Soon, other insurers may do the same.
