Distracted driving deaths nearly double impaired driving deaths

September 2nd, 2016  |  Auto

Road deaths involving distracted drivers is on track to double deaths involving impaired drivers, say the Ontario Provincial Police.

So far this year the OPP have investigated 38 distracted driving deaths and 19 impaired driving deaths, according to Global News. Police and other experts believe that part of the reason more distracted driving deaths occur is because people don’t look down on distracted driving as much as they do drunk or drug-impaired driving.

“While both of these driving behaviours are equally threatening to the safety of road users, this latest data has the OPP calling for a heightened awareness of the prevalence of distracted drivers and the risks they pose on our roads,” read a statement from the OPP.

As people hit the roads for Labour Day weekend, police warn drivers to stay sober behind the wheel and keep their eyes on the road.
