Did You Wrap Up an Insurance Policy to Go With That Drone?
This holiday season, drones are expected to top wish lists and pile up under Christmas trees across North America. But experts have an important message for novice pilots: get an insurance policy.
Flying drones will likely take races, exploration, and photography to new heights. However, drones will also come with their fair share of risks. Like any other object hurtling through the air, a drone may accidentally injure someone or cause damage to personal property. Especially as pilots of all ages and skill levels get behind the controls.
So here’s what you need to know about drones and insurance.
First of all, according to the Toronto Star, some home and renter’s insurance policies will cover you for third-party damages and injuries caused by drones. So if you accidentally crash your drone into your neighbour’s window or knock someone in the head, the liability insurance in your current policy may protect you.
Keep in mind that some companies, such as Allstate, may cover third-party damages, but not damages to your own personal property. So before you launch your drone across the street, check in with your insurance provider and see what drone coverage you have, if any.
If your homeowner’s insurance doesn’t cover your high-flying adventures, you can turn to the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA). The model aviation association offers its members a robust package of personal liability and medical coverage.
You may not have thought about drone insurance before, but as the popular technology becomes more common, you’re going to have to. Whichever insurance route you choose, remember to fly with caution.
