Confusing Jeep gear shifters get software fix

June 30th, 2016  |  Auto

A recent Fiat Chrysler document suggests that a fix is on the way to address the confusing selector in some Grand Cherokees.

The fix would introduce an “Auto Park” feature that automatically places the vehicle in park if the driver fails to do so before exiting the car.

The transmission issue has caused a number of damaged vehicles, injuries, and possibly even death, as it has been suggested that actor Anton Yelchin’s death was caused by the same issue.

According to Driving.ca, the new software will be available to Grand Cherokees equipped with the 3.6L V6 and the 5.7L V8. The update will reprogram the power and transmission control modules as well as the radio frequency hub and instrument panel. The company should have notified or will notify affected vehicle owners soon. Information about FCA recalls can be found here. If you drive a 2014 or 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee it’s worth checking your vehicle’s recall status.
