In Canada, natural disasters and severe weather cause hundreds of millions of dollars of property damage. For homeowners, severe weather is one of the biggest threats their home will face, but with home insurance and some simple preparation Aviva Canada and the Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction (ICLR) aims to help cut down on the amount of Canadians from having to make home insurance claims.

Aviva and the ICLR have released a free app called Plan & Protect that will help keep users prepared for any natural disasters. The app is personalized to users and their location. Not only will it contain tips for avoiding common weather damage, but it will act as a digital filing cabinet for your insurance documents. According to Canadian Underwriter the app will let users upload and access home and auto policies straight from the app, no data or Internet connection required.

In the event of an emergency, users will not only get forewarning of the threat, but will be walked through the steps of dealing with the emergency and filing their claim.

The app is available now on both Apple and Android platforms.
