Canadian auto insurer partners with safety-conscious telematics manufacturer

November 3rd, 2016  |  Auto

Calgary-based brokerage InsuranceMy has taken a significant step towards improving safety on Canadian roads. It has partnered with UK telematics provider Trak Global Group, securing exclusive distribution rights to one of the British company’s award-winning products.

Trak developed a program for Carrot Insurance called New Driver. By giving beginner drivers ongoing feedback in real-time, this system lowers the risk of road accidents by a considerable amount and helps develop good driving habits.

According to Insurance Business magazine, “the occurrence of road traffic collisions among Carrot’s new policyholders was reduced by 42%.” Last year Carrot received a prestigious Prince Michael International Road Safety Award for its role in releasing New Driver.

This partnership could provide a boost to Vision Zero Canada, a domestic initiative that is working to keep roads safe for all commuters. It was inspired by a Swedish initiative that “saw driving deaths decrease by 50% through improved infrastructure, traffic control and education,” per Canadian Underwriter.

Going forward, the telematics technologies that make programs like New Driver possible could have an enormous impact on insurance policy. If drivers can have their road actions tracked and evaluated, it allows insurers to tailor their pricing based on performance. Good drivers will have ample opportunity to save on car insurance when such policies are implemented.
