Borrowell offers free, no-strings way to check your credit score

June 21st, 2016  |  Personal Finance

The credit score is one of the single biggest factors affecting a person’s financial ability, yet many people don’t know theirs. Online lender Borrowell wants that to change and so will now offer free Equifax credit scores to anyone who wants a better picture of their financial health.

Part of the reason people don’t know their score is that the only way to get yours without applying for a credit product is to purchase it from a company like Equifax or TransUnion, which while not very expensive, is still more than most people feel like paying. Hence why Borrowell’s CEO, Andrew Graham, figured providing a service like this would make a big splash.

According to Betakit, the new service requires users to fill out a form and submit. Once they’re done they’ll see their credit score and be told when the score will be updated. While knowing your credit score is important if you’re interested in borrowing money, you don’t need to borrow from Borrowell or need a credit product at all in order to check your credit score.

The form will also provide information on how to get your credit report and offer tips how to keep your score nice and healthy. Spreading financial literacy beyond just the scope of product offerings is one of the many ways fintech companies distinguish themselves from traditional institutions such as banks and credit unions.
