B.C. Woman with 14 Distracted Driving Tickets Still On the Road

March 21st, 2016  |  Auto

Police in British Columbia have been left baffled by a woman who has managed to rack up 14 distracted driving tickets in the last five years and are requesting she have her licence taken away.

According to Global News, the woman who is an experienced driver in her 40s, nearly collided with a Richmond RCMP officer on March 3, prompting them to tweet a picture of her embarrassing driving record (with her name removed). Less than a week later she received her 14th ticket.

How has her licence not been suspended? Well, that would be because it’s only been a couple of years since distracted driving tickets in B.C. have come with demerit points. So while she only now just has 12, she would have had 42 if the laws had been a little stricter. The police said they have submitted requests for her licence to be suspended, although the Department of Motor Vehicles denied receiving any requests.

Still, even if she has kept her licence, the insurance penalty those 14 tickets have on her premiums must be pretty high. Not to mention the $167 fine per infraction.

British Columbia is looking at implementing new (read: stricter) changes to the distracted driving laws this May.
