Automatic Braking Becoming Mandatory for US 5 Star Rating

November 3rd, 2015  |  Auto

The U.S. government is aiming to make the roads a little safer with automatic braking becoming a necessity for their five-star safety rating system.

The five star system was designed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to help consumer’s identify vehicles equipped with the latest safety features available.

They announced that automatic braking would become a necessary feature for all 2018 auto models. The NHTSA originally announced in September that it had reached agreements with all ten automakers to incorporate the option in all their vehicles.

Automatic braking technology uses sensors to identify upcoming hazards and signals the driver to slow down. If the brakes are not applied, the vehicle will automatically decelerate.

Accident investigators estimate that this safety feature could reduce the instances of rear-end collisions by up to 80 per cent; potentially preventing 1,700 deaths and 500,000 injuries.
