Auto insurer offering discounts to drivers of automatic emergency braking cars

November 30th, 2016  |  Auto

Automatic emergency braking (AEB) is a relatively new system that is still establishing itself on the roads. But one auto insurer has begun offering a new discount that could potentially start a trend and make AEB more of a mainstream feature in vehicles.

Aviva Canada is incentivizing drivers to use AEB in their cars by offering them a 15% discount on their auto insurance who drive one that utilizes it. However, the discounted rate will only apply to driving-related coverage and not to other types of claims that couldn’t have been prevented by AEB.

By using sensor-based technology, AEB systems are able to scan the road and recognize when a front-end collision is imminent. When a car is nearing a collision, warning sounds will begin to go off. If no action is taken at that point, the braking mechanism will kick in and prevent the car from crashing.

Earlier this year it was announced that the government and a long list of automakers will partner to ensure that AEB is a standard feature by 2022. With AEB set to normalize, perhaps discounts like Aviva will be a short-lived offering. Those is a position to capitalize on these rates should seize the moment and do so.
