August Snowfall Brings Early Winter to Alberta

August 21st, 2015  |  News

Labour Day weekend is well known as a last hurrah for campers bidding farewell to summer but winter beat them to it with snowfall in Western Alberta yesterday.

Bill McMurtry, a Meteorologist with Environment Canada, reported that most of the snowfall was seen at higher elevations, the Rockies and Foothills areas. It also fell in Calgary and the towns of Airdrie and Cochrane, located West and Northwest of the city.

"We are anticipating that snow will continue for the remainder of the afternoon and evening period," he told CBC News. "As the system moves off to the east towards Saskatchewan and Manitoba we'll see skies clear overnight and that will end the precipitation."

Not everyone was disappointed with the snowfall, the Lake Louise ski hill tweeted their love for Albertan weather early yesterday afternoon.

Where it wasn’t snowing, it was raining in most Southern Alberta regions. The temperature is expected to fall overnight and frost warnings have been issued for some parts of Western Alberta.

McMurtry stated that the weather was supposed clear up by Sunday. Until then, Albertans can continue practicing their winter driving in August.
